- Biography
Born in 1958, Manhu Roche studied the bases of jazz with his brother Philippe ROCHE and Michel PETRUCIANNI and with American drummer Tox DROHARD. In 1982, he moved to Italy where he stayed for 14 years during which he played and recorded with a lot of italian musicians.
On returning to France in 1996, he joined Michel PETRUCCIANI's Graffiti Quartet which then became the ZDF TRIO with Detlev BEIER (b) and a quartet with Steve GROSSMAN (ts). He accompanied PETRUCCIANI throughout all of his European tours until his passing in 1999.
«Manhu Roche’s painting is primarily musical. Like jazz (he is a drummer) is always border line. Both permanent research and always rooted in the contemporary tradition. This is why he finds all sources in the history of painting.
His work has nothing spontaneous, it follows a long preparation. Joie de vivre shines his game with colors that deposited on the canvas. But his painting is the product of a thoughtful construction or the various steps are essential to the development of his work. His gesture, sometimes fast during the final execution is safe and controlled and his painting does not mean a cold and totally calculated construction, because for each work, we feel the emotion.
