La chorégraphie de Sophiline CHEAM SHAPIRO se distingue par sa technique impeccable, sa capacité à élargir le vocabulaire classique cambodgien et réaliser de nouvelles œuvres, et ses collaborations avec d’autres disciplines.

Ses danses originales ont été commandées par des tournées et à des lieux sur les quatre continents.

 

Cheam Shapiro est une artiste de McKnight International Artist Fellow, promotion 2013. En 2009, elle est lauréate de la bourse nationale du patrimoine pour les enseignants chercheurs et devient assistante aux États-Unis. Elle a reçu notamment le prix Nikkei Asie pour la culture en 2006 et a reçu le Creative Capital, Durfee, Guggenheim et la bourse de danse Irvine.

 

Née à Phnom Penh, Cheam Shapiro a été membre de la première génération de diplômé de l'École des Beaux-arts après la chute du régime des Khmers rouges et a tourner à l’international avec la compagnie de l'école. Elle est également diplômée de l’UCLA Département des Arts & Cultures du monde.

 

Cheam Shapiro est la co-fondatrice et directrice artistique de Khmer Arts, une organisation de danse transnationale basée à Takhmao, Cambodge, et Long Beach, Etats-Unis.

SOPHILINE CHEAM SHAPIRO’s choreography is distinguished by its impeccable technique, its capacity to expand the Cambodian classical vocabulary and realize new works, and its collaborations across disciplines. Her original dances have been commissioned by and toured to venues on four continents, including Vienna's New Crowned Hope Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Los Angeles' Disney Hall, New York’s Joyce Theater, New York’s Guggenheim Museum Works & Process Series, Amsterdam’s Muziektheater, Ann Arbor’s University Musical Society and Chapel Hill’s Carolina Performing Arts.

Recent works include Stained for Fire! Fire! Fire! — a triple bill with choreographers Pichet Klunchun (Thailand) and Eko Supriyanto (Indonesia) that was performed throughout Southeast Asia in 2013, and A Bend in the River, which premiered in April 2013 at Minneapolis’s State Theater as part of Northrop Concerts & Lectures and then was presented at New York’s Joyce Theater as part of the Season of Cambodia Festival.

Cheam Shapiro is a 2013 McKnight International Artist Fellow, a 2009 recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship and a USA Knight Fellow. She was awarded the Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture in 2006 and has received Creative Capital, Durfee, Guggenheim and Irvine Dance Fellowships, among many other honors.

Born in Phnom Penh, Cheam Shapiro was a member of the first generation to graduate from the School of Fine Arts after the fall of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime and toured internationally with the School's company. She is also a graduate of the UCLA Department of World Arts & Cultures.

Cheam Shapiro is the co-founder and artistic director of Khmer Arts, a transnational dance organization dual-based in Takhmao, Cambodia, and Long Beach, USA.
